Smart Sustainability - join ARM's research project and receive free benchmarking opportunities

ARM and IBLF have launched a survey on how the technology sector is addressing global sustainability issues.

The brief online questionnaire will take no more than 5 minutes and all participants will be sent a soft copy of the final "Smart Sustainability" report.

There are significant extra benefits if you then have time to go on and complete a more detailed survey, which will take around twenty minutes:

  • a (confidential) report benchmarking your company's performance against other respondents
  • the right to use this data, and the final "Smart Sustainability" report, in your own publications
  • $10 donation to the East African Drought Campaign from ARM for every full survey completed
The resulting report is assured excellent coverage through ARM's participation in the UN LEAD initiative and the associated activities. The International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) is working with ARM to compile this report. Please click here to complete the questionnaire.

We would like to thank you in advance for your participation. If you have any queries about the questionnaire, please contact Bridget Cochrane, Director of the Digital Partnership at IBLF Bridget.Cochrane@iblf.org.

Design To Revolutionize Prepaid Meter

An ARM-based prepaid meter reference design will enable secure purchase and reload of energy credit balance using smart phones or contactless smart cards.

A joint initiative between Freescale Semiconductor and INSIDE Secure, the secure prepaid utility meter reference design with near field communication (NFC) connectivity will enable OEMs to quickly and cost-effectively bring to market electricity meter products. The reference design, based on the Freescale Kinetis MK30 microcontroller (MCU), provides the first NFC-based, prepaid meter with the ability to securely reload energy credit balances.

The system is powered by the Freescale MK30X256 32-bit MCU (built on the ARM CortexTM-M4 core), which operates up to 100 MHz with 1.25 DMIPS/MHz. The firmware is based on Freescale's MQX real-time operating system. The built-in segment LCD controller displays all standard metering values at the push of a button.

Products based on this reference design are protected from fraud via a VaultIC security module and NFC technology to safely load energy credits from a smart card or an NFC-enabled phone.

Openmoko is a project dedicated to delivering mobile phones with an open source software stack.

ZigBee-Based Home Energy Gateway

Digi International has taken the wraps off the ConnectPort X2e, an enhanced Smart Energy gateway optimized for large deployments of Smart Energy devices in a Home Area Network (HAN) including utility meters, thermostats and in-home displays.

The ConnectPort X2e features a Freescale iMX28 ARM9 based processor, 64 MB RAM and runs Linux.  It has full certification to ZigBee Alliance Smart Energy Public Application Profile 1.1 and backwards compatible to 1.0.

The wireless gateway provides a low-cost connection between Smart Energy devices and remote web applications, Digi’s Smartlee application for iPhone and Android, or utility-hosted websites designed for consumer engagement. By sharing the homeowner’s broadband internet connection, the wireless gateway provides near real-time energy data access and control capabilities based on the Smart Energy devices enabled in the customer’s home. Digi said.
